The world's number one Test team has beaten England by an innings and 75 runs in Chennai on Tuesday to extend their unbeaten streak to 18 matches, a new landmark for Indian cricket. A thrashing of England in the fourth Test in Mumbai had sealed a fifth success series win and equaled India's longest unbeaten run of 17 Tests, chalked up between September 1985 and March 1987, and Virat Kohli's team has now carved out a slice of history by breaking the record with its 18th match without defeat.

Since Alastair Cook's visiting England beat MS Dhoni's team at Eden Gardens in December 2012 to take an unassailable 2-1 series lead, India have played 19 Tests at home without defeat, winning 16 and drawing three. The wins have come over Australia (4-0 in 2013), West Indies (2-0 in 2013), South Africa (3-0) in 2015 and New Zealand (3-0) and now England. Dhoni was captain when India whitewashed Australia and West Indies, and Kohli in the last three series.
The draws during this time were against England in the fourth and final Test in Nagpur in December 2012, South Africa in Bangalore last November, when rain washed out four days of the second Test, and with England in Rajkot last month.
From January 28, 1977 to February 3, 1980, teams led by Bishan Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath stitched together an unbeaten run of 20 Test matches against England (two), West Indies (six), Australia (six) and Pakistan (six).

This Indian team appears primed to match that record in the New Year, unless Bangladesh can produce something extraordinary like that did at home in October when they beat England inside three days.
