The monetary crunch and the infusion of new notes have wrecked the economy beyond respite. People are finding it difficult to obtain or exchange cash with most of them not even owning a bank account. Statistically, 86% of cash has been withdrawn from the economy, leaving the country on the brink of depression.
However, RBI has said that the “defect” could be because of rush in printing and people could use these notes or return it to RBI. Now there are reports that two variants of ₹500 are doing rounds in the market, which are surprisingly different in color and design from each other. At least three cases have been marked where there were evident differences between the two ₹500 notes, reports The report also mentioned that such differences in legal tender could make counterfeiting easier, which was one of the reasons cited for bringing demonetization in place.
A resident of Delhi told the newspaper that the note had visible shadows of every object, including the image of Gandhi and the national emblem. Some items on both the notes were placed differently.
Another one said that the size of borders were unequal in two notes. The difference of color was also spotted in one case, where one note was lighter in color than the other.

Talking about the discrepancy, RBI spokesperson Alpana Killawala told Times Of India, “It is likely that notes with printing defect has got released due to the current rush. However, people can freely accept such a note in transaction or return it to RBI.”
The government has stopped all over-the-counter exchange of notes on Thursday without a single warning. This morning, they announced that all exchange can be done only at RBI counters.
