Eleven people, including two women, were arrested by police for being seated while the national anthem was played ahead of a film screening at the ongoing in international film festival kerala Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. They were later let off on personal bail. They were charged under Section 188 of the IPC, which deals with refusal to obey an order promulgated by a public servant.
Six people, however, told the police that, having arrived late, they were in a hurry to find seats and had no intention to insult the national anthem. Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman and festival director Kamal said the incident happened before the screening of Arabic film 'Clas nisha gandhi auditorium, one of the festival venues.
The other five were arrested from the same venue during the 8.30 pm show of the movie 'Death in Sarajevo'.
Photos of the seated people went viral on social media and, on the basis of a complaint by Yuva Morcha state general secreta rs rajiv the state police chief directed officers to look into the matter. "The festival organisers have requested for our assistance to ensure the court order is complied with," police chief loknath behra said.
