AIADMK adopts resolution; Sasikala elected party's general secretary

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa's aide V K Sasikala on Thursday agreed to take up the responsibility of AIADMK general secretary, a few hours after the party general council resolved to entrust the post with her, said chief minister O Paneerselvam.

Panneerselvam handed over a copy of the resolutions passed by the general council to Sasikala at Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden residence. This would perhaps be the first time that a general secretary has been appointed without an election.

The general council meeting was held at Vanagaram on the outskirts of Chennai. A resolution appointing Sasikala as the party general secretary was proposed by 23 leaders, including Panneerselvam and deputy speaker of Lok Sabha M Thambidurai, and seconded by over 2,000 general council members.

While the meet was still on, Panneerselvam and senior colleagues Edappadi K Palaniswami and Thambudurai came out and announced that they would leave for Poes Garden to meet Sasikala and get her consent for the unanimous resolution appointing her as general secretary.

This general council unanimously passes a resolution to appoint V K Sasikala as general secretary until elected as per bylaw rule 20, section 2 (election of general secretary by primary members)," the party said.

The general council passed 14 resolutions. The meeting condoled the death of Jayalalithaa, urged the Centre to declare her birthday (Feb 24) as national farmers' day, bestow Bharat Ratna on her and install a life-size bronze statue of her in Parliament. It resolved to get Ramon Magsaysay Award and Nobel Peace Prize for Jayalalithaa.

Sasikala joins Sonia Gandhi (Congress), Mamata Banerjee (TMC), Mayawati (Bahujan Samaj Party) and Mehbooba Mufti (Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party) as woman party chiefs.
